Heath swore under his breath as he opened the door to the redhead with the tawny brown eyes who’d rocked his world only hours before. If he’d ruined everything—after all his mother’s sacrifices and their years of hiding—with a one night stand, he’d never forgive himself.

The rules and precautions his mother had drilled into him for his entire life meant that he was usually more careful than to invite a stranger into his home, but he’d been desperate for a distraction last night and let his guard slip. On his mother’s birthday, he and his sister Mae would usually visit the place in the hinterland where they’d scattered her ashes four years earlier, but this year he’d had a last-minute hiccup in the staffing schedule at the bar. As the owner, the buck stopped with him. Mae had offered to postpone the trip, but he’d insisted she go—at least one of them should be there to honor their mother.

Now that Freya—assuming that was even her real name—had tracked him down, he was glad that Mae was out of town. If they had to move again and change their names, it would be easier if those chasing them continued to be in the dark about Mae’s existence.

Freya walked to the tall windows overlooking the view of Noosa’s main beach, then slowly turned to face him, fidgeting with the strap of her handbag.

He checked the time on his watch. “You have five minutes. I suggest you talk fast.”

“This is fairly delicate. Do we really need the ticking clock?”

“Do I really need this at all? I think five minutes is generous.” His stomach dropped as another thought hit. “Was last night part of this—did you deliberately seduce me? All that talk of forgetting, was that part of the game?”

She flinched and the faint freckles across her cheeks disappeared as her face flushed red. “That is not why I was here. In fact, it’s made everything more complicated and it shouldn’t have happened.”

“On that, at least, we agree.” He ran a hand down his face. “How about you tell me why it is that you’re here. You have four and a half minutes.”

She nodded. “I’m looking for someone and you’re on the list of people who could be that person.” She shifted her weight from one long leg to the other. “This is rather blunt, and I’m sorry, but your countdown is on. I know your birth certificate says you were born in Mexico. Is there a chance that you were adopted there, or that you were really born in the US to a different father?”

Knowing the contents of his birth certificate was a red flag. Questioning its validity was another. He glared, hard. “Not really sure why I’d disclose a single thing about myself to you. I have no idea who you are.”

“My name is Freya Wilson and I’m a forensic accountant with the FBI.”

A cold chill passed across his skin. “The FBI is looking for me?”

“No, I’m on leave. This is.
